Cloud Rat: Moksha

08/04/13  ||  gk

Moksha is the second album from American grindcore trio Cloud Rat and this is some high quality grind that throws in the odd surprise. The band starts with grindcore as a base but is unafraid to experiment with new sounds; whether it’s the doomy opening of “Aroma” or the ethereal “Infinity chasm” which combines shoe gaze like atmosphere with an American folk music vibe before exploding into pure grind madness right at the end. Elsewhere on the album, the band also cover a Neil Young song and pretty much own it. This is impressive grindcore that is catchy, political without being preachy and memorable. I’ve found myself listening to this a fair bit over the last couple of months and grindcore is not something I listen to a lot of. Overall, I have to say that Cloud Rat has delivered a high quality album of grindcore that holds up to repeated listening and is well worth checking out for fans of the genre.

8/10: Impressive and memorable.
